POKOTABI / Taikotei
うどん食堂太鼓亭 京都向日店
Located in Morimotocho, Muko, Taikotei serves up straightforward diner comfort—from rich beef dashi udon and yellow Chinese noodles steeped in Japanese broth to hearty rice bowl sets and fresh tempura.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Taikotei provides an easy, dependable everyday meal, operating on a casual cafeteria system where you order your noodles and pick up sides and tempura on a tray as you head to the register. The signature niku dashi udon sets itself apart from standard beef udon, which often uses briefly simmered thin cuts; here, the bowl is crowned with generously thick, thoroughly stewed beef that melds naturally into a Kansai-style broth fragrant with katsuo (bonito) and kelp. A condiment station just before checkout allows diners to top their bowl with scallions and crisp tenkasu tempura flakes to their liking.
Beyond traditional udon, the restaurant is known for its wide selection of ki-soba—yellow Chinese-style wheat noodles served in Japanese dashi broth. Options range depending on your mood, from the savory-sweet niku tsuke ki-soba with pork dipping broth to the misokko ki-soba, an ingredient-packed dish featuring pork, burdock root, carrots, and slippery nameko mushrooms in a miso-infused soup.
For a heartier appetite, set meals pairing udon with dashi-rich katsudon (pork cutlet rice bowl) or oyakodon (chicken and egg) make a solid choice. Alongside ready-to-grab vegetable kakiage, large anago (conger eel), and skewered beni shoga (red pickled ginger) tempura, staff can often fry fresh batches upon request, adding crisp fried sides to your bowl.
Set along the roadside with a spacious free parking lot, the restaurant offers counter seating, standard tables, and family-friendly booths. Between the "chibikko udon" sets complete with small toys for younger children and portable udon bento boxes with onigiri for takeout, it functions smoothly as a welcoming, hassle-free neighborhood diner for solo diners and families alike.
